Ghaith Niama and his family are from the Iraqi city of Mosul. When ISIS took over the city his family and all other Christians in the city were given the choice of converting to Islam or being killed, Ghaith and his family had to flee for their lives. They arrived in El Cajon (a town just east of San Diego) in April of 2013. Ghaith is an employee at Paradise Point Resort, right next to Sea World. Ghaith’s wife Evan is is studying communications at Cuyamaca College, working towards being a translator in the courts. Gaith’s mother Ailana is a lifelong artist and her artwork is displayed in their home as well as in local community spaces. Gaith loves his life in the U.S.. America is “a dream land, anything you want”, back in Mosul ISIS has taken control of everything and Christians can’t live there. Here they have found support and another chance.
